Painting nails is a common body practice among many females. They paint their nails different colors to express themselves. They use this body practice to impress others, match their clothes to be more presentable. Mood, season, and fashion trends all can have an effect on nail colors. For example, when in a bad mood I paint my nails black or a very dark shade of color, because certain colors are associated with feelings. For example, black is gloomy and bright colors like yellow or pink are associated with being happy. Nails can also be painted to impress others, since it can make someone look more put together. Fashion also has an effect on nail colors and styles, and change every season just like clothing fashion. This follows Bordo idea that women are required to constantly be on top of the current fashion trends, also discussed as “a pursuit without a terminus”. As a result of keeping up with the styles in nail fashion, whether it be a french manicure or a new color, women turn into “docile bodies” which Bordo defines as “bodies whose forces and energies are habituated to external regulation, subjection, transformation, “improvement”. Overall nail painting is a popular pastime of many women worldwide. Even though not all women enjoy painting their nails, they do it because they feel they need to so that they can keep up with the current styles and trends.
