Belly Dancing

A common body practice today is belly dancing. Belly dancing is based on the emphasis of abdominal muscles, hip movement as well as chest movement. It’s traditionally performed with bare feet and distinguished by smooth, complex, flowing, and sensual movements of the torso and shimmy moves are also incorporated.

Belly dancing originated in the Middle East and North Africa centuries ago. It was popularized in the 18th and 19th century when artists wanted to convey harem life in the Ottoman Empire. Today, belly dancing has been re popularized in different parts of the globe and many artists such as Shakira incorporate belly dancing in their choreography. I was interested in belly dancing after Shakira’s song; “My Hips Don’t Lie” came out. I watched many videos and took the time and patience to teach myself how to belly dance and now I’m able to perform this form of art.

Belly dancing is a body practice, considering that it’s used by various artists and some elements of belly dancing is incorporated in music videos, concerts etc. Hence, artists who practice belly dancing are docile bodies because they use some elements of belly dancing in order to improve and change the way they dance. In relation to rhetoric, our popular culture today has influenced many women to learn this dance and as a result, taking belly-dancing classes is becoming more accessible.
