This is our land

Jake Sully tells the Navi that the sky people delivered a message to them saying that they can take whatever they want and that nobody can stop them. In response to that message, Jake tells the Navi to gather together as one and fight the sky people and yells, “This is our land”. Considering that Jake is the sixth person to tame the Leonopteryx, (big flying animal) he is now considered Toruk Makto. As Toruk Makto, the Navi look up to Jake, which enables him to have qualities of a leader. After watching this scene several times, I could feel the passion in Jake’s voice about defeating the enemy, especially when he yells, “This is our land”. This exemplified the intensity of the situation, considering that it was the prerequisite of the events that were about to occur. In addition, it was a great way to emphasize the importance of gathering together and motivating the Navi to fight for their land and their freedom. In reiteration, this scene tried to make the viewer feel motivated by the passion of Jake’s message. Jake delivered his message by the Tree of Souls, which is the closest connection to Eywa, the higher being of Pandora. This conveys the importance of the message to the viewer because the Navi have a spiritual connection to Eywa and the Tree of Souls is a place where they can feel closer to Eywa.

The message this particular scene conveys to Navi is the importance of unity in order to fight the sky people. If the scene weren’t by the Tree of Souls, it wouldn’t impact the Navi as much because that is the closest connection to Eywa, which is a large component of their spiritual connection. In addition, the fact that Toruk Makto delivered the speech inspired the Navi to unite and fight for a common cause because that is a high figure in their society. When Jake yells, “This is our land”, this reinforces that Pandora belongs to them, NOT the sky people. In conclusion, these three components of this scene solidified the importance the unification of the Navi in order to fight for their land and their dignity.

  1. This is also the first time that the Na'vi people recognize Jake as "one of them." This is funny, because they do this once he does something that Na'vi people typically do not do. For a large part of the movie, he tries to practice their traditions, but of course, the one non-traditional thing he does gets their acceptance.
