Even more so than his occasional voiceovers, the video logs Jake records through the course of the movie let the viewer see beyond the action onscreen and into Jake Sully's mind, letting the viewer relate to the character more.
One of these scenes in particular stands out to me - the one shortly after the team moves their base into the mountains. In this scene, Jake talks about his personal growth with the Naví, and the scenes shown during his voiceovers shows his learning about the native peoples' connection with Eywa and the creatures on Pandora. These dialogues show Jake's change from a "Jarhead" among the 'Sky People' into one of the Naví.
The scene focuses more on Jake's interactions both with Neytiri and the humans as he struggles to learn the language, ride that horse creature, move about the lands of Pandora, and learn about hunting and tracking. The scene brings the Naví life and lifestyle to a more personal level, and also shows many aspects of the landscape on this foreign moon-planet, from running on top of the trees to crawling through the jungle. Finally Neytiri tells Jake "You are ready" (to be a hunter), and he joins the other hunters-to-be in climbing up the mountains to where they find the home of the 'Banshee'/pterodactyl beasts.
This montage of different scenes portray much of the visual wonder of the movie and the beauty of the world created for it. The scene shows Jake's slow change from a naive human onlooker to a respected member of the Omaticaya clan, which is one of the pivotal shifts in the plot of the film. We are drawn in by the imagery of the preceding scenes, and Jake's education by both Neytiri and Norm (along with Grace, I suppose) is also educating the audience as we see these various aspects of life and death on Pandora.
