"How much have you logged. Zip. But I read a manual."

This is the scene where Dr. Grace discovers Jake has no experience with Avatar, and has just read a manual. After directing Jake to his machine, Dr. Grace asks how much Jake has logged, which he replies to saying, “Zip. I read a manual.” She can’t believe it. Jake then gets himself onto the table and Dr. Grace attempts to help him move his legs into position, but he refuses her help. She then asks why he decided to take such a risky adventure without any training, which he replies,” Maybe I was sick of doctors telling me what I couldn't do..” I thought this scene was important since it sets Jake up as the protaganist. Through this scene the viewers are made to feel sorry for Jake, since he is paraplegic. As a result of these feelings, the viewers take a position in which they see themselves as Jake and begin to feel for/with Jake. Since Jake also seems like he is not even sure why he is here and seems confused about his life, his character becomes very easy to relate to for many viewers. It is also made clear that Jake is only here since his brother has similar DNA, so he was able to take over his brothers spot. This is not something Dr. Grace is a fan of, since she was hoping for his brother who had a lot of experience with Avatar. Also in this scene, Grace also states, “Just relax and let your mind go blank, shouldn’t be too hard for you.” Jake replies with,” Kiss the darkest part of my lily white...“ I believe this is also important because it provides a divide and tension between the two characters. Throughout this scene you can tell by Dr. Grace’s tone of voice that she is not at all impressed with Jake and does not appreciate him. By providing a divide between Dr. Grace and Sully the viewers find themselves siding with Sully. This relationship changes after Jake’s reasons for being there and opinion of the natives changes. The scientific background of a biology lab helps bridge the gap between reality and fantasy, since many believe that through science anything is possible, including using one’s mind to control an avatar. The background music in scene also adds, since throughout the scene it intensifies and becomes louder, this pattern goes along with the pattern of Dr. Grace and Jake’s conversation which becomes more intense throughout the scene. By establishing their relationship in this way, their relationship is only able to strengthen throughout the movie, which leads all viewers to eventually become a fan of Dr. Grace, just as Jake does in the movie. This scene is used to help viewers support Jake and his position and for viewers to relate to him. It does this by showing how he is continually receiving help and being told what he cannot do, which he rebels to by joining the mission to avatar. He wants to prove himself and show others than he can do it himself without anyones help. This scene also sets up the relationship between Jake and Dr. Grace, which although seems tense in this scene, improves greatly over the course of the movie, along with the position the viewers have of Dr. Grace. The science looking lab as a background helps to bridge the gap between reality and fantasy, and the music also helps to guide the viewer and the positions they form. Also the connection between the viewer and Jake strengthens throughout the movie, to the point that the realization that Jake is in a fantasy world seems to disappear until the credits appear, at which point Post-Avatar depression starts to kick in. In general this scene proves how each and every part, from music to dialogue to objects to clothing to background to, well, everything in a movie is thoroughly thought out to force the viewer to take (a) certain position(s) and feel (a) certain way(s) throughout the movie, which is ultimately why movies can be so moving and people can become so attached to them.

  1. I almost did this clip, just because of the interaction between Grace and Jake, and how it truly shows how far and how much their relationship changed throughout the course of the movie.
