The power of a person’s scent is a way that one can be distinguished in a romance. In a romance, when the scent of the significant other is recognized, the feeling of nostalgia ignites. It brings back thoughts, feelings and memories that are associated with the romance. By recognizing the specific scent, it can bring one to a certain time in their life when they were in love.
The term J’adore means, “I adore you” in French. In this ad, Charlize Theron is the sex symbol that elicits the subliminal message in this ad. Her slightly provocative clothing is a teaser and it makes Theron have more sex appeal. When I examine her facial expression, it’s almost as if she saying, “Yeah, you know you want me.” Her slightly provocative clothing and her facial expression have an effect on the person who is viewing this ad, in the sense that the feeling of being wanted is elicited. The fact that she’s walking in water compliments her slightly provocative clothing and her facial expression. All together, her slightly provocative clothing, facial expression and the gold tinted water contribute to the subliminal message that is elicited in this ad. On the right side, a picture of the perfume is illustrated in order to accentuate the message of the ad, which is the feeling of being adored. Hence, when a woman views this ad, it’s supposed to make them want to be adored by wearing this perfume from their significant other. Charlize is that WOMAN who represents the one being adored and the ad implies that YOU can be that WOMAN who is adored by the power of your scent that is associated with a romance. Essentially, by wearing this perfume, the ad implies the feeling of being adored in a romance that is ignited by nostalgic feelings, thoughts and memories.
I like how you talked about how sensory has an effect on memories and in this case, romantic memories. Scents are definitely powerful memory triggers. I also like how you say that Theron is asking to be adored in this advertisement and that when a woman sees this ad, she too wants to be adored by their significant other.
ReplyDeleteI also think the fact that this advertisement is foreign makes is romantic, but not just in a lover sort of way. Foreign things to Americans almost seem artsy, tapping in on one of the romantic themes. So, this usage of a foreign language romanticizes this poster, letting them into their romantic fantasies.
