One of the biggest topics I feel is over romanticized is marriage. In the movies and television shows they paint the picture of marriage to look like this "happily ever after" institution, when in the majority of cases in the United States it is not. The divorce rate in the United States is just tipping over 50% which means one out of every two marriages result in divorce. Out of those who divorce 71% of those that remarry will get divorced a second time. Many of you are probably wondering why movies glorify or romanticize this institution when the majority of marriages in real life fail, well the answer is simple. Millions if not billions of dollars are made annually on marriage related things from the actual ceremony, to the gifts bought, to the necessary paper work. If movie and television producers did not romanticize marriage as they do then perhaps the masses would not marry as often.

Weddings = money industry.
ReplyDeleteI liked how you pointed that out. Obviously, if one is married 2 or more times -- marriage is not truly honored or sanctified. Therefore, the only true reason they would have... is that society says that's correct. And that life and love are better with marriage. Cake, white dress, catered meal.. interesting. Thanks.
Yes, this phenomenon is widely existing in today's world, not only in American. From researches, it was found that divorce happens more in developed countries and bigger cites.
ReplyDeleteThere is a famous saying: "Marriage is the tomb of love." Before marrige, all people need to concern about is love; but after marrige, the new couple have to face all the problems in life. There is always a happy ending in movie, but not in life.
ReplyDeleteLove and marriage is hugely romanticized in America today. I mean, lots of girls that I know practically have their weddings planned already. One problem though: no man. It almost seems like people sacrifice love so they can have their fantasy.
ReplyDeleteYou can also take into consideration that getting a divorce is more socially acceptable and accesible than it was in the past. In addition, the media also portrays more of the "good" aspects of marriage, instead of portraying the ups and downs of marriage.
