Pandora Intro Scene

In the scene towards the beginning of the movie where we (the audience) are first introduced to Pandora we see the terrain of what looks to be a computer generated rainforest with a purple sky and a few moons. I feel like they made the terrain of Pandora like a rainforest to try to make the planet feel exotic to the audience by assuming most of the audience is not from that part of the world. This comes across as lazy and uncreative because they are making the audience believe that the landscape of a planet that is in a totally different galaxy than our own has almost identical plants to that of an Amazonian rainforest. The creators of this movie took the look of the stereotypical indigenous tribesmen made him more cat-like, colored him blue, put him in a rainforest, and expects the audience to be amazed by how the aliens and their planet look nothing like what we have on earth. James Cameron also tried to make the planet look more exotic by throwing a bunch of animal in the forest that somewhat resemble current animals on earth or dinosaurs (i.e the dog he warded off with a stick, the triceratops with the hammer head and the pterodactyl). When people call this film "creative" or a "masterpiece" it gives me chills to know that some people do not get how easily James Cameron took a plant, or animal or person and simply altered them slightly or colored them differently to make them look "exotic".

  2. I think that since the audience is primarily American, who don't normally see rainforests that the scenery seems based off, allows it to seem exotic. I mean, there are far more Americans watching the movie compared to Brazilians, so it doesn't really matter that James Cameron used real foliage that is different colors. It simply gives insight to the type of viewer.

  3. I never really realized how similar some of the plants were, but then that really just shows that it's all about perception and how others can view things. I think it managed to work because everyone is unfamiliar with those kinds of plants, and paired with the new movie technology it really created a different sort of feeling.
