Only in Your Head? Being High

In the article"Becoming a Marijuana User" by Howard Becker, he explains the theory that getting "high" off marijuana could be all in your head. Most people do not get high their first time smoking pot. Some people say this is because they do not know how to inhale properly, while this may be true Becker explains that it is because they are not used to the sensation of being high. Getting a buzz off marijuana has to deal with the culture you are accustomed to. If you mostly hang around stoners then you will most likely learn to use and enjoy the sensation of being high. This stoner subculture uses the object of marijuana as a means to bond one subject with another. If you are not a part of this subculture however it may be harder to get high simply because without a sense of what the sensation feels like you really cannot differentiate being high from being sober. This is a truly remarkable theory because it basically states that the whole sensation of being high is all in your head. Marijuana as a substance has no physically addicting qualities to it, however some argue that it can be psychologically addicting considering the fact that almost anything can be. So if the sensation of getting high off pot is only in your head and it possesses no physically addicting substances, then why is it still illegal? I am not a pot smoker nor am I an advocate for its legality, but it seems rather silly to me that it is illegal when more debilitating and addicting substances such as alcohol and tobacco are legal.

  1. I feel like once a pot user 'learns' to achieve the sensation of being high he or she might be led to start using "harder" drugs by their peers thinking they'll be easier to use or better. Even if it isn't technically addictive it is perceived as addictive and can be a gateway drug. So that's why it's illegal.

I found the fact that getting high off of marijuana is largely psychological, at least at first, surprising.
