Beauty does not mean skinny

Hey Mom, are you still on a diet? Why you try best to keep slim? That’s actually one of the aspects in culture studies. In ancient Tang Dynasty in China, the beauty always had plump figure. Those beautiful girls were usually compared to flower vase. That’s why the shape of flower vase at that time looks round and fat. However, as culture changes a lot, people’s aesthetic standards are totally different. In Susan Bordo’s article, ‘The Body and the Reproduction of Femininity’, she points out that “at school the anorectic discovers that her steadily shrinking body is admired, not so much as an aesthetic or sexual object, but for the strength of will and self-control it projects.” Mom, do you have same feeling when you lose weight? The culture of the society can be reflected by the figure of women. In nowadays, the beauty is represented by woman who has slim legs and slender waist, like fashion models. Due to the effect of the culture, people prefer to see the woman whose is close to a male. Susan Bordo also states in her article that “ to achieve the specified look, a particular feminine praxis was required-strait lacing, minimal eating, reduced mobility-rendering the female body unfit to perform activities outside its designated sphere.” They keep the slim figure but ignore the health problems. The woman is always fettered by the culture. That’s why theory should exist. Theory is a scientific conclusion and proved by trials, it can instruct people to live in a scientific and healthy way. As a result, not only can the woman has slim figure, but also can help them be in good health.

  1. I strongly agree with you. The person who wants to be beautiful must be healthy at first. Too much diet will do harm to one's body. It's not necessary to keep very slim.
