A prominent cultural object in today’s era is the world of Facebook. Whether its connecting with someone living down the block or someone living on the opposite side of the globe, Facebook has become a primary way of communication for many. Despite being one of the largest networking sites on the internet, some of the population is sticking to the tried and true methods of communication. The position Facebook argues one into taking is that its completely acceptable to open yourself up to the public. Anyone who logs onto Facebook can immediately see that it is commonplace for fellow users to tell about the interests, careers, education, and lifestyle on their profile. In addition, one can also list their family members’ profiles on their Facebook, revealing even more information about the user. By being able to list your relationship status, “friends” are able to instantly see when a user breaks up with a significant other (which may otherwise be viewed as a private situation for many people). The most obvious show of Facebook’s acceptance to revealing personal information to the public is the site’s ability to store an unlimited amount of pictures on each user’s profile. While written information may be personal, seeing a person’s life play out in photos takes the matter to a whole different level. While many people have grown comfortable with releasing personal information to the public via Facebook, others view the site as a welcoming invitation to predators. Despite both positive and negative reviews, Facebook has undoubtedly brought many people into connection that otherwise would have never met.
