The Snooki Boot
Walking down the street, you see a girl wearing huge, furry boots. Instantly, your mind makes some sort of connection to Snooki. Made famous through a popular reality tv shore Jersey Shore, she has somehow built this bridge between herself and her trademark footwear. There are hundreds of photos of her on the internet, in magazines, ect., in countless different versions of the footwear. They are practically even coined as her own, too. They aren’t “the ridiculous furry boots that Snooki from Jersey Shore wears,” they are “the Snooki boot.” Just typing that in google yields thousands of results, urging you to buy the “Signature Snooki Boots.” How did insanely furry boots develop this bridge to Snooki?
Snooki is by far the most famous of all of the Jersey Shore characters. She has this short, drunk, and promiscuous character that is above and beyond many other characters in the media. She does what others do, but always makes sure to go above and beyond any regular reality tv star. Snooki has become so well known that she has almost developed a completely new stereotype. I mean, Snooki-types are practically popping up all over the place. This new persona has emerged and now the “insane party girl” can be given a label.
Because Snooki and her character are so prevalent, when she starts wearing these (strange) boots, they almost become iconic. The boots are over the top, and they completely fit her completely over the top character. I mean, the boots ARE Snooki. This is also said about not just Snooki as an individual person, but also as a character, persona, or stereotype that she has developed in the popular reality show Jersey Shore. Her over the top character that has become a new stereotype and because the boots match it, a bridge is built between her and her iconic furry boots.
Her excessive makeup, tan and dark hair also build a bridge to her over the top character and the boot compliments this look. Almost every person on the Jersey Shore has a distinct feature like Snooki. For example, Pauly D is known for his hair, Mike (the situation) is known for his abs, Jenny (J wow) is known for her implants, etc.

ReplyDeleteI actually think Snooki's personality is not as over-the-top as the other personalities on the show, which is interesting because her look is definitely pretty crazy and distinctive. She's very sweet and she wants everyone in the house to get along, whereas a lot of the other people are more self-absorbed; yet, her appearance has caused brought her iconic fame. What does that say about the way we judge tv personalities based on physical appearance?
