Paul VI discusses the birth control in 14th paragraph in his Humanae Vitae, he says that “Therefore We base Our words on the first principles of a human and Christian doctrine of marriage when We are obliged once more to declare that the direct interruption of the generative process already begun and, above all, all direct abortion, even for therapeutic reasons, are to be absolutely excluded as lawful means of regulating the number of children. Equally to be condemned, as the magisterium of the Church has affirmed on many occasions, is direct sterilization, whether of the man or of the woman, whether permanent or temporary.” Paul VI thinks that abortion is unlawful no matter what reasons people have. He cannot accept people deliberately interrupt a child’s life, which was unborn, or even unformed.
It’s difficult to tell whether Paul’s idea is right because everything has two sides. Plan B is a good example; it is an emergency contraception pill. It can prevent pregnancy up to 72 hours after unprotected sex or contraceptive failure. (Wiki pharmacy) The invention of Plan B brings people lots of benefits, especially for the young girls who are more than seventeen. Wiki pharmacy says that Plan B can be used as a backup method to birth control if, for example: people’s regular birth control failed (her partner's condom broke or slipped), people made a mistake with her regular method (she forgot to take you’re her birth control pills), or people didn't use any birth control method, Plan B will a good choice for them. If we support Paul VI‘s claim, that means Plan B will be unlawful as it is a pill which will kill an unformed child’s life, even though Plan B is not an abortion pill. That also means that female should or must give birth to the child because any abortion is illegal. Then the consequence is that the population size becomes larger and larger and there will be no enough resource for people to use. At that time, more and more people died, even the earth will disappear.
Paul VI only consider people’s life and human rights, he didn’t consider the situation of a country and people herself. However, although we cannot tell Paul VI was all correct, his idea is worth to be considered by human beings. We should show our respect to life. In addition, Plan B also has its disadvantages; some women lose the ability of giving birth to a baby after taking too much Plan B pills. As I said at the beginning, everything has two sides. No matter who is right or who is wrong, what we should do is respecting life, and taking responsibility to health of ourselves.
