Salvation Army: Anti-Gay

Today I stumbled across a news story that made the argument that the Salvation Army is Anti-Gay. I went on to read the article where the cited specific examples to prove their point and some of the evidence they show is pretty shocking. One of the most interesting pieces of information posted in the article on lgbtqnation.com was : "In the United Kingdom, the Salvation Army actively pushed passage of an amendment to the Local Government Act. The amendment stated that local authorities “shall not intentionally promote homosexuality or publish material with the intention of promoting homosexuality” or “promote the teaching in any maintained school of the acceptability of homosexuality as a pretended family relationship.” The law has since been repealed, but it led many schools and colleges to close LGBT student organizations out of fear they’d lose their government funding." This is very aggravating to me that a charitable organization goes out of their way to blatantly oppose gay marriage. I think these facts need to be presented to the public so people really know what the organization that they are donating thousands of dollars is really doing.

  1. This reminds me of how the Boy Scouts explicitly deny membership to both members of the gay community and to atheists. My guess is that in the case of the Salvation Army, at least here in America, people with extreme right-wing tendencies have influenced policy decisions like this. You can see the disliking of homosexuality in the phrase "acceptability of homosexuality as a pretended family relationship." 'Pretended' seems an odd word to use in a charity's policymaking regarding people's lifestyles.
